What to do in Las Vegas

Gaming is the only reason Las Vegas, as it is today, even exists. If it were not for Nevada's liberal gaming laws, Las Vegas would still be a small town people came to soak in the natural hot springs. For the last half century people have come to soak in the flashing lights and the spinning reels while looking for that ever so elusive pot of gold. High-rollers, who bring their own large pots of gold to Las Vegas every day, built this town. They are the largest single source contributors to gaming revenues for hotel-casinos in Nevada. We all play (and pray) for the same reason—to get lucky—to find that pot of gold. The odds? Well, that's another story.

Las Vegas Shows. Headliner and production shows, comedy, magic, music, dancing and singing shows. And let's not forget, Las Vegas has some of the hottest and coolest nightclubs in the world, like "TAO" at the Venetian, "TRYST" at the Wynn and "PURE" at the Palms . Artistry and imagination bring you Cirque du Soleil productions of "Zumanity," at New York New York , "O" at the Bellagio , "Mystere" at Treasure Island and "KA" at MGM Grand . On a lighter side, have a bellyful of laughs at the many and varied Comedy Shows. For families, shows include David Copperfield, Mamma Mia and XTreme Magic.

Nighlife. Vegas is all about nightlife, and there is never a dull moment. If you are looking for peace and tranquility, you are not going to find it on the Las Vegas Strip! In most of the hotels you are going to find casinos, entertainment and dining options. Some of North America's hottest musical and performing arts talent is right here, every night. Most performances are great, some are good, and just a few are so-so. The point being; if you can't be entertained in Vegas, you can't be entertained anywhere.

NightClubs. When considering entertainment, the Las Vegas nightclubs and the Las Vegas Stripclubs (if you are so inclined) are the good places to look. Clubs in Vegas range from hedonistic parties, like at Coyote Ugly found at New York New York Hotel Casino, to sophisticated evenings of wine and champagne, like at the Risque, which can get a little risque in its own right. You will want to check out the Las Vegas Shows , which range from production and headliner shows, dinner and magic shows, concerts and tribute shows, to music festivals and other live events.

Attractions. There are many attractions in Las Vegas, including the Las Vegas Strip itself. Among them include seeing the world's largest gold nugget at the Golden Nugget , the Cirque du Soleil performance at the Bellagio, the MGM Grand and at Treasure Island , or King Tut's Tomb replica at the Luxor Hotel Las Vegas . There are many other attractions, such as at the Fremont Street Experience every night, and the Volcano eruptions at the Mirage, and the Bellagio fountains, which are free to all. If you can make a whole day of it, go out to Red Rock Canyon, or Valley of Fire or Mt. Charleston. They're all within driving distance of the strip.

Other Activities in Las Vegas

There are a whole variety of things to do other than gamble or party in Las Vegas. Las Vegas tours by land, lake (Lake Mead—what's left of it anyway) and air are available for you to experience and enjoy. Within the confines of Clark County there is the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (a must see) just a few miles west of Las Vegas. Valley of Fire, which is the largest and oldest state park in Nevada, and Mt. Charleston with a 7,000 ft. elevation. (A word to the wise here about driving up and back from Mount Charleston. Make sure you have a designated driver, or just don't drink. Nevada State Troopers patrol the area like hawks. They will pull you over for doing 2 MPH over the limit and write you up for it. If they think the driver has been drinking, they'll arrest everyone in the car. It's just not worth it. So much for what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.) You can flutter over Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon in a helicopter or soar in a fixed wing aircraft, or dare yourself to step onto the Grand Canyon Skywalk extending beyond the canyon's ledge. Some tours are combination trips including hiking, horseback riding and white-water rafting. Educational venues include Guinness World Records Museum, Hollywood Movie Museum and Lied Discovery Children's Museum. Check out all Las Vegas tours here.
